Sleeping in Switzerland

November 17th, 2008

Without fail, when R goes away Small Boy comes to sleep in my bed. He sleeps so much better – he falls asleep faster and stays asleep longer – when he’s with me. I, on the other hand, sleep worse. I’m constantly waking up to change over to the other side of the bed because the Small Boy has cuddled up this close to me and I’m about to fall off the edge of the bed. So I get out of bed, walk around the other side, and try to fall asleep again. About an hour later I’m being pushed off the other side of the bed. And so it goes.

Seriously. How can somebody just over one meter tall take up an entire king-sized bed??

    He’s very talented.

We have a cat who can take up the entire bed. It’s astounding to watch.

My son Oliver is the same. He got to spend the night with my father last summer when my mother went out of town — they have a king-sized bed, and my father says that he sleeps all curled up. He woke up to find Oliver draped across his neck and literally flung him to the other side. They’re really amazing, right?

Well, the same way somebody just over one meter tall can take over your entire LIFE. :-) :-) My 15 yr old is 6’1″ now and I swear he takes up less room than he used to. Funny how that works.

My younger son is like that. (talented, of course!)

We banned him from our bed pretty early on because we’d wake up with his elbows in our sides and his feet in our faces. It was like trying to sleep with an entire troupe of Cirque du Soleil acrobats! (with a couple of additional friends thrown in for good measure!)

The thing that kills me is how much better he sleeps when we share a bed – which is important when I’m single-parenting – yet how much worse I do – which is bad when I’m single parenting. Classic Catch-22
